English Early Literacy Tutor (36 hours/week) – Three-quarter Time AmeriCorps Member

At Literacy First, we focus on achieving successful outcomes for emerging readers in Title I schools by providing one-to-one tutoring to ensure all children are reading at or above grade level by third grade. We use an explicit, research-based curriculum of scripted lesson plans to address critical reading skills. Tutor training and support will be provided by our expert literacy coaches.

This is a great opportunity to:

  • Pursue an optional alternative teaching certification through Region 13 during your second year of service

Essential Functions: Literacy Tutoring

  • Conduct 20-30-minute daily tutoring sessions with K-2nd grade students, at your assigned campus, using Literacy First
    English curriculum
  • 36 hours each week, Monday – Friday from 7:30am-2:30pm (plus an additional hour each week for planning and preparation)
  • Maintain organized and proper documentation of all lesson plans and student data
  • Administer assessments to identify students that qualify for Literacy First tutoring
  • Assess and record students’ progress using weekly progress monitoring probes
  • Attend data meetings with campus staff to communicate student progress
  • Communicate effectively with Literacy First staff, school staff, and teammates
  • Attend pre-service training and ongoing literacy trainings throughout the year
  • Tutors serve for a 9-month term from September 2, 2025 through May 22, 2026

Secondary Functions: Community Service

  • Attend weekend service projects 2-3 times per year
  • Engage in professional development activities

Service Environment

  • Tutors will walk to classrooms on their assigned campus in between tutoring sessions to bring students to and from the tutoring area.
  • Tutors will be sitting for most of their work time interacting with students.
  • Tutors will direct a lesson and maintain focus in an environment where other tutoring sessions will be taking place and the noise level may be distracting at times.
