Words of Encouragement to Future Students

By Chelsea Fevry, 2020-2021 Literacy First Tutor

Dear Future Students,

This year has been filled with many uncertainties and unknowns. Even so, I am still so excited to start the school year and ready to begin all of our amazing lessons together. Even with the uncertainties and unknowns that may have come up, I am grateful to have a special year of getting to know one another. I am also so thankful to have this time to not only help you learn to read, but how to read with “fluency.” What does it mean to read with fluency? Fluency is “our ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.” Reading with fluency means reading like you talk, and not like a robot. When we read with fluency, it means we are reading not too fast and not too slow. Fluent readers read at a speed that feels just right for them and they always make sure they are trying their best! If you don’t feel like the best reader right now or don’t feel too excited about reading, don’t be discouraged. Remember that practice is the best way to become better at anything. One of the best parts about all of our sessions is that you will have a lot of time to practice this year, and Literacy First tutors will be right here to help you! If you make a mistake when you read, don’t worry. Remember that everybody makes mistakes before they become better at anything. When you are feeling like you can’t do something or read well, don’t be too hard on yourself. Always believe in yourself! Things might be a little difficult at first, but all things are difficult before they become easy. Lastly, I want you to remember that you can do anything that you set your mind to. All of us at Literacy First believe in you and we are rooting for you. I can’t wait to dive into this journey of reading with you! Here’s to a year of learning and fun!

Love,
Your Literacy First Tutor
